One oversight is in thinking that management- from lower to executive- constitutes 20% of the workforce. It's maybe 10% max. Them being unemployed by AI would barely impact unemployment figures, and they're generally the ones best able to lose their jobs given the golden parachute tendency. They're not the types to be content w $1000/month UBI handouts either, but it's true that UBI will never happen... under capitalism. At least not without a threat of social revolution. The rich will always feel they've earned their disproportionate wealth- regardless of AI's role (and the role of the rest of us) in generating the wealth- and will resist "sharing" the wealth we made for them. Their "solution"- as ever- will be extermination of what Marx (long before modern tech and AI) called "surplus population-" by war, disease, or outright fascist genocide... merely to avoid "sharing". Their sociopathic greed makes them as heartless as AI: both they and AI instantly and systematically seek such "final solutions."
If you throw in the accountants and other easily AI-replaceable office staff, the unemployment figures do rise dramatically. The skyrocket in unemployment would be in mass replacement of people by robots/automation since those are a massive portion of the population. But the ones actually making the infrastructure happen- factory labor, construction workers, cooks, medics, firefighters, police, technicians, etc.- will never be replaceable by robots or AI. The logistics for that don't and never will exist: the amount of finite resources required for robots to replace a guy who installs receptacles and toilets in new housing construction- or troubleshoots robot failures- will never be justified profitwise. Nor will "self-driving" cars ever be able to reasonably take over vehicles for the same reason: the logistics are far too prone to failure- even worse than idiots who look at their cellphones while driving. Only if a rise in accidents (and the ensuing litigation and destruction cleanup) is deemed an acceptable loss will AI drivers successfully replace humans. Many things AI can never do, and AI is perpetuated by mining materials that are scarce and finite on the planet.
So the real "surplus population" issue will arise from those who didn't want a particularly physical job- the "middle class"- most of whom have jobs replaceable by AI. Teachers, artists, management, web designers, real estate agents- even politicians- anything that can be delivered via a PC monitor. That population will become desperate the further that AI insinuates itself in the economy. So that's when the draconian nature of the greed of the rich will rear its head w "solutions" further than just "immigration control" or cutting national welfare programs. AI will never question those "solutions."
