I don’t think tech ai bros will ever truly understand the points yall are making because tech is all about advancement and efficiency, art and creativity is all about imagination and creating something from an idea. These things can exist in tandem- like tools to help artists. Digital artists have progressed because of advancement in artist software and tools such as drawing tablets and brushes to mimic the analogue tools. But like so many beginning artists, they get trapped in this idea that “better tools make better art” and while that can be true in some instances- like you’re going to get better results from a watercolor piece if you use better paper to absorb the pigment, but it’s not going to make you a better artist. You have to put in the work. You have to learn. You have to make an effort to get the results you want. But the tech bros think that it’s a waste of time- why would I do this when it can save me so much time and effort. I wouldn’t even argue against AI if that was all it was meant for, a tool to help. I know some people use it in their process and I can see the benefits. I want to make a graphic novel one day- I can see where using AI could be beneficial to save me some time. But I won’t. because you’re right- right now it’s not ethical. Right now, the working models are taking from artists who did not have a choice and did not consent to having their artwork scrapped to train the AI to generate images. On top of that, here’s the kicker, I actually want to learn. I want to figure out how to be better at art, I’m really weak in backgrounds and I want to be better at them. The only way I can is if I put in the effort to be. If I just use AI to do them for me, I gain nothing from it. I will never learn how to do it for myself. And frankly I just think that’s terrible, it’s like riding a bike with training wheels because you’re too afraid to fall.
