When programmers say they don’t know how AI algorithms work, we have to break that down a bit.
I did some neural networks programming back in my college days so I have a very basic understanding of what’s going on under the hood.
It’s not that they DON’T KNOW what’s going on, it’s quite the opposite. They know exactly what the algorithm does. In fact, the mathematical operations performed on the granular neural level are basic addition and multiplication, nothing fancy. And this is why it’s mind boggling. From very basic operations performed a thousand times with some feedback loops you get an intelligent system that could do facial recognition or some other tasks that require intelligence. That’s what they mean when they say they don’t know how it works. They can explain things in dry mathematical terms, but they can’t intuit the ‘how’ and can’t explain it naturally to a layman.
