Hinton was the guy who claimed human radiologists would be obsolete by 2021, and not only did that not happen, but demand for radiologists has increased since then. CNN needs to wise up with these tech gurus, otherwise they're no better than sensationalist tabloids. Building technology does not mean you have any special insight into the economics of technical change, and Hinton clearly does not base his arguments on any sort of analysis.
For more serious work, see Daron Acemoglu's "macroeconomics of AI." Daron anticipates a relatively modest impact from AI, around 1 -1.6% GDP boost over 10 years, and only around 5% of total tasks will be automated. Both figures are far less than the hype suggests, and translate to an annual productivity gain of only ~0.05%.
