Universal Basic Income is not enough. While UBI can provide a financial floor, it doesn’t replace the need for universal public systems—like guaranteed jobs, Medicare for All, affordable housing, food security, and education—that not only lift people out of poverty but also reduce our structural dependence on wages to meet basic living costs.
AI cannot fully replace large segments of the service sector, care work, and human-centered jobs that require emotional intelligence, physical presence, and complex social interactions. Despite all the hype, those claiming that AI will replace millions of jobs in the next few years rarely offer concrete, data-backed models showing which jobs, how quickly, and to what extent. While AI-related job displacement is real, its scale and speed are often overstated.
Even if UBI becomes politically viable, we can’t decouple UBI from the productivity and distribution of real goods and services. The value of UBI money will erode if we don’t maintain or increase productivity in sectors like housing, food, infrastructure, energy, transportation, and education. UBI is only as valuable as what people can buy with it.
We are undeniably heading toward profound changes in how we work, but unless we build universal, decommodified systems, we risk worsening social crises:
- More homelessness
- Declining birth rates
- Growing healthcare inaccessibility
- Rising inequality and social instability
