I can think of at least three distinct levels of the universe at which a massive group of small individual things combine together to be something greater than the sum of their parts: 1) A massive number of atoms and molecules, given an appropriate environment and mechanism for self-reinforcing feedback self-arranged to become life: self-reproducing organic machines, but also so much more than that. 2) A massive number of these organic self-reproducing machines (cells) self-organized to create multicellular organisms: complex individual organisms composed cells which defy their own survivability in favor of the larger organism as a whole 3) A massive number of neurons carefully orchestrate a massive number of chemical and electrical signals to produce consciousness. Consciousness is just the sum of these electrochemical signals, but it is also clearly something much more than that. 33:15 The default position among people is that obviously AI (at least now) is not having "experiences" or "consciousness" because it's "just a machine" or "just a bunch of 1s and 0s". Although it may be impossible to ever know if these machines now or in the future have some sort of consciousness/experiences, the idea that it is impossible because it's just it's made up of 1s and 0s, totally ignores that our consciousness is made up of just individual atoms interacting in specific ways. The universe has proven that massive amounts of tiny, discrete, individual things working in highly coordinated ways can (and do!) produce something that is more complex than the mere sum of their parts.
