Even though AI tools are trained on millions of images to make art, the way it makes art is actually quite different than just applying a style from an artist, I think this is what existing artists need to understand before they automatically think AI art is stealing. There is basically room for new creative potential in AI art, which makes the field exciting. At the same time I think directly using a contemporary artist's work or style through prompting or using their work as the base image definitely violates copyrights and should be prohibited for a healthy ecosystem, but using public domain artists and their styles are fine as dictated by law, I mean if it concerns commercial work. That should be really be the line to draw both to protect existing artists but also give new artists room to experiment with new medium and potentially have rights to their work.
