As a person who is late in life (37) trying to do art for the first time I can say it is %100 skill! Art is not talent! Some people have talents that can (potentially) aid them and make some aspects of art easier for them, like an intuitive sense of perspective or lighting but that’s not innate to all artists. Where this “Blue Blood” idea comes from is people seeing the final result of easily a decade of hard work and dedication. Because we humans are really really dumb sometimes our brains can’t fathom or comprehend time built skills and only see the now. Humans are really bad at assumptions, just flat out. They see the finished work and their brain screams talent. AI artist (if you can call a person that) is just people wanting the finished product without any effort on their part. Which as a lazy person I can understand but I also can admit it’s not a skill and should not be seen as respectable or impressive as a trained artist. I’d love if I could just put my idea into the paper without having to work for years but that’s not possible and even with AI it’s never really what I wanted, just a close approximation. AI is not art. AI is just a digital image made, often, trained from the real works of real artists, and usually without their permission. If people say AI art is valid and should be considered on par with an artist who spent decades honing their craft they are just flat out wrong. Yes it’s cheaper than paying an artist. Yes it’s faster. But it’s inconsistent, takes more resources than just doing it yourself (look up AI server farms and their impact), and you can’t claim any form of accomplishment with AI art because it’s not YOU! AI art can be helpful to convey ideas with unskilled people to the artists or to others if you lack the funds to commission some yourself initially. But you can’t take pride in anything done by AI because it’s a computer generated image and you had very little to do with the outcome. So as a person with no talent in art skills and who is frankly about the level of a toddler, I REFUSE to believe that art is only for the special and talented. I’ve seen and grown up with people who had 0 talent in their art become freaking awesome and doing works that put even highly paid professionals working at billion dollar companies couldn’t even get close to. I think this persons concepts of art being a talent and not a skill is pure learned helplessness. They either think they can’t learn, don’t want to invest the time, or think it’s far too long before they see their returns. All of this is just a means to cover up an insecurity of their own self worth. Art is not a talent. Art is a skill built from mileage and not something you can just be good at out the gate. Some people can have innate ability but that is rare, limited, and often can hinder long term development as they learn to rely on the easy over pushing themselves to be better. Kind of like how AI artist stifles your improvement because you are too scared to take responsibility of your mistakes and learn from them. My stance on this topic is simple: if you are good, you failed enough to be good. If you are great, you failed enough to make yourself wish you had given up long ago, but never did.
