I am in the camp that generative AI is not inherently bad, it's how it's used by people.
Imagine someone with disabilities who simply cannot draw, or just cannot draw for any other reason.
That person can have some very original ideas in their head.
Imagine that person coming to an AI, telling them about what they want. But the thing isntead if working the way it does now, it just makes a sketch, or a fragment. Then furhter promoting is required to keep refining and adding elements. It's less of a game of coming up with a single prompt and trying it over and over again until you get something good enough, but it's just a genuinely creative process of creating digital art, it's just the tool doing it is AI listening to someone's commands, as opposed to someone using a stylus.
You could use this kind of AI to aid someone even with manually created art, just let some details be handled. Like, you already can use tools like filling a space with a gradient of colours, instead of manually tediously creating the gradient. Imagine the same principle, asking AI to fill the sketch of clothing on a person to be filled with realistic knit pattern, instead of manually tediously creating the texture of the clothing.
And again, it would all be about further gradual adding details and refining, not getting a full image that you don't really know what it's gonna be, all at once.
And transpose the same principle for writing stories, making music, anything that generative AI could do.
I think generative AI designed to be used that way would be perfectly ethical, would be just another tool for people to use. At best it's a matter of creating laws around what can and cannot be used in training datasets, what is in public domain and what is not, or whether e.g. if a specific artist does not eant their art to be used for AI training, then what if another artist copies that style and allows their art to be used in training datasets? And so on. There's a lot of nuance there.
All in all, I think all the current problems stem from the wild west stage of this technology and how it's been designed and used without the society being ready for it, without appropriate cultural norms or laws around it.
I honestly wish I had the kind of AI tools like I described for my personal use to help me achieve style that I have in my head, not copying anyone else, but one I feel is beyond my capabilities, it's unfeasable and therefore I don't have the resolve to dedicate to drawing. This would help and I wouldn't be an ahole stealing other people's art, it would be just a tool for me helping me do what I want, akin to how I already mentioned people already use various tools in digital art that back in the day would be considered "cheating" - I just want a more advanced version of that further democratising accessibility to original creation.
