New fear of AI takeover, check😵💫
To add to what he said, people's basic need for purpose/identity can come from our jobs, but if you zoom out, it's about how we fit into a community and connect with others. In today's world, we have to go out and find our tribe with like-minded people.
For eg, I quit corp and got into fitness. There are many who go to be in a group with others, and to meet people. To have others there brings accountability and motivation.
I've seen best friends form after meeting in my class. l've seen "gym bros" spotting each other and becoming friends. It's a chosen community.
Especially as we get older, it becomes harder to meet new friends. I don't fear my job will go away with ai. (Pandemics are another story)
Totally agree that having hands-on skills like plumbing is so important and needed.
But if that isn't your thing, jobs where you help to connect people is going to be even more important than ever.
Think about the shortage of therapists.
I know hair dressers who say some people don't get to talk to someone for hours except in their chair.
When it comes to even medical, we look for a doctor that understands our issues. We want human empathy and understanding.
Similarly, and using his example, when I call customer service, it's a complicated situation and a last resort. When I can't get ahold of a human, I get beyond frustrated.
The problem is that investors are so concerned with their bottom line, that they are diluting their business by relying on AI too much.
These mass layoffs in tech also corrupts safety, creativity, and innovation. (Like Boeing) It costs lives.
I know the cell phone industry. Thousands of very smart/skilled and experienced people have been laid off in recent years. The interpersonal ways in which real humans interact has been very much impacted in a negative way. Like networking, managing employees, listening to feedback, and those skilled at coming up with creative solutions for their department or geographical area. As its said, people don't quit jobs, they quit their managers.
We live in a complex and dynamic human world, that's the area that AI can't replicate.
The problem is that the people at the top only want to invest in ai. Not people. And they don't care. With large mergers, there's less competition. Hey, everyone needs a phone. They don't care about customers or employees. AI has a place to make lives easier, but relying on it too much out of greed is a shame and I think a mistake.
