People with free time pursue their own projects, leaving them "unaligned" with the interests of the people running the show. You will have a nanny state which justifies its intrusiveness into your life on the grounds that the state keeps you. If you want "free" stuff, you will "voluntarily" accept privacy, autonomy, and initiative. The super-rich will be on top, running things. "He who owns the gold makes the rules" is the golden rule. Owning AI, robots, factories, land, will make you a "have" living in a much different world than the have-nots. We're likely entering the wildlife management phase of human civilization. It's not so much that we will have factory towns, as human "game wardens" who grudgingly concede that it would be inhumane to simply wipe out the poor, who are now completely "unnecessary." At least, that's the near term. The future is one of abundance, so a Star Trek utopia could be waiting for us once our societies get realigned after an ugly period of adjustment during which the super rich try to figure out what to do with all these "useless" poor people you no longer need to work in your factories and service jobs.
