I personally don't love the Ghibli style but, that's just my taste. I still hold respect for the studio and the artists who cultivated this art style. I would never insult it just because I personally don't feel strongly about it. I would in fact argue that the guy was right that part of the attachment is from Studio Ghibli creating such wonderful stories that they associate the style with, and that's... Okay, actually. The artists working on the animation are using it to tell this beautiful story and so the stories influence the art. It makes sense that appreciation for the story would lead someone to growing attached to the art style. I am a huge render artist, I love rendering pieces. The AI princess Mononoke is not better. She's polished but she lacks the feeling. Rendering is fun for me because I can put extra emotion into something and invoke feelings based on the lighting. In a piece I drew a few months ago, it was based on a roleplay scene, but when doing scene accurate lighting, it lacked the feelings that I wanted - of chaos and distress and the whole world falling apart. So I scrapped the rendering and started again. I had already done chromatic abberation effects on the word art and the character in center, so I used those colors to add harsh, colored lighting and yet also a lot of shadows. I loved how it turned out in the end. I got the emotions that I wanted out of it. AI can't do that. AI can't make the decision and purposefully choose anything. The highly polished pieces feel so empty. Plus Mononoke's empty bedroom eyed stare doesn't help. Ghibli's art is expressive, AI art is not. Especially of women. It's always completely dead. Unless directed otherwise, women will always have the same face, with the sort of empty expression that's supposed to be attractive.
