Unlike prior automation gains, today's AI is very different. In the past, most significant innovations in automation were limited to a few areas initially, and then would expand into other areas over time.
I've been working in AI since the dark ages (1980s), even then our AI solutions were simplifying human tasks or eliminating the need for humans to perform tasks or a combination of both. The system would start on the simple use cases, and gradually be improved to work on more and more complex use cases. Today, with generative AI and now agentic AI, that all happens much faster, and the AI learns from the humans it assists until the human workers are no longer needed.
Today's AI can be applied to a much wider range of human tasks using the same underlying tools and technologies, and some of what works AI in HR, may be used in other areas such as accounting, marketing, customer service, which in turn can be used in other areas. That is, AI impact will be much more widespread across many more human work tasks than prior automation advances.
And, AI improvements are accelerating faster every day.
