My wife used to work as a property manager in a large section 8 apartment building. It was absolutely crime ridden. People would just randomly start fires in the hallways, apartments would get trashed by tenants, gang violence was ever present (there were at least 4 murders on the grounds in a year, non fatal shootings were much more common) , and large areas functioned as open air drug markets. The company had surveillance cameras (that were spray painted over every time new ones were installed) and they paid the police department something like 300k a year to maintain a police presence. If the company didn’t pay, the cops said they just wouldn’t show up. Every morning my wife would send out the maintenance staff to pick up trash and maintain the grounds. By the late afternoon the grounds were trashed again. People see this kinda stuff and think “racism” or “police state” but there is a significant amount of people in these projects who just want to live their lives safely and unmolested. Not surrounded by drugs, trash, and death. But there are also a significant amount of people there who live entirely antisocial lives, who care little for their neighbors and their safety. While I’m pretty firmly against facial recognition tech being used in public housing, if there was public housing that had no cameras whatsoever and zero police presence, there would be a wapo article that said “the police have abandoned us”. There really isn’t a great solution, either policing is too heavy-handed and people are mad, or they’re nowhere to be seen and the place has descended into an uninhabitable hellhole.
