Huge problem with scanning for AI use is that it directly targets students with disabilities. The majority of the things it looks for are ways in which those with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism among others write. They detect a lack of personalisation, repetitive word choice, strict structuring, and “text book” writing. All of these are signs of neurodivergent students. Then you have students with severe dyslexia or other learning disabilities that make it difficult to get through college who need to use assistive writing. Grammerly is a good example of this. It has long since been used for TBI patients and those with learning disabilities and has now been roped into the AI ban. It was created in 2009 and has been widely used in various practices. The free version corrects spelling, grammar, tone, and sentence structure from already written text. It doesn’t give answers but thanks to ChatGPT anything with assistive AI is band even if it doesn’t have that capability because they don’t know if a student simply used Grammerly or copy and pasted from ChatGPT. At some point we have to accept that AI is part of the world and learning as a whole. Targeting honest students with difficulties especially in classes they will never need ie. Research and technical writing for a computer programer should never be the answer.
