I wouldn't call the hiring process stupid or silly for testing your fundamentals and whether you can solve Leetcode-like questions, it is still a real need as you will have to deal with situations where you really need those skills whether you are writing the code yourself or even reviewing what the AI writes assuming it was able to produce the desired algorithm.
Also, some big legacy projects are using old languages which AI doesn't really have enough data about, which means the code it will produce is not as good as C++ for example or python.
