I think the old guys living alone using the AI companions are fine. The lady who can't seem to get enough chat time with AI friends is fine. But the young men, like the one who killed himself and Antonio (who uses AI even though he feels terrible shame doing so) is where we see a real problem, but their use of AI alone is not the real problem. The real problem is that real-world social interactions and developments have become more difficult (for young men in particular) and less rewarding while AI ones have become easier, more rewarding, and more accessible. Developing and maintaining a romantic relationship is difficult, particularly for regular young men. With time it has become more and more difficult for young men, for many, many reasons. In anonymity, Antonio was able to state the truth plainly and the truth is that pursuing a romantic relationship as a regular young man is just not worth the effort. Dating is broken and although most who consider the problem seriously would admit it is worst for young men, we see that a lot of people prescribing solutions to the problem are saying the young men need to "step up." We have seen many, many so called "experts" do this, but very few offer any useful direction or advocacy. Saying "step up" is beyond unhelpful. What we need is to understand the obstacles and advocate to remove them on a societal, legislative, and government policy basis. To state it more plainly, we need to do more to help regular young men become what young women find attractive, not just tell them to be better.
