I decided to repost my deleted comment (11/03) here, anyway:
The difference between Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia (they started to build their own AI), Amazon, and others with OpenAI is that these tech giants remain capitalist. In order to survive or maintain their position as tech leaders, they have to push innovation and eliminate every idealist or ethicist in the company to maximize their potential. Meanwhile, the OpenAI guys consist of more pure and honest scientists who genuinely want to push their vision of AGI to the world. The AI project, for them, is like the ultimate legacy.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the OpenAI executives resigned from the company once they realize that the things they built started showing odd, out-of-control behaviors.
