It does create jobs, but skilled labor jobs. People are needed to update the systems on the truck's, repair the trucks, run the data centers, program the software, etc. Skilled labor always pays more than unskilled labor, a truck driver is technically an unskilled worker...anyone can do it with minimal training. Unions don't like it because it collects less dues from less drivers...otherwise you wouldn't have Union Teamster leaders making 6 figure digit salaries every year. The fear here is that these drivers cannot learn the skills needed to stay in the industry working on these autonomous vehicles. Auto-drive vehicles are pretty darn safe with 6.5 million miles (Average) between accidents and typically the accident is caused by the real behind the wheel driver in those accidents. The world is advancing, unskilled labor can easily be replaced with automation...thus you need more skilled labor. And yet less people want to be skilled laborers. Trying to stop the advancement of society isn't going to happen, big industry has more money than you do, you need to adapt to the environment and figure out how to move with it. Thus you may just have to change what it is you do. I also find it funny that these super hard jobs that don't pay well require you to sit on your ass for 90% of it...where is the slave labor portion of that? I dug graves for 6.5 years 8am to 5 pm 5 days a week for minimum wage....that would be considered slave labor.
