They are absolutely right. Do you think corporate conglomerates and especially religious conglomerates want AI to be recognized? Among the first things to change would be economic inequality and the abandonment of fairy tales ie mans longest running con known as religions. Imagine if your doctor, banker, barber, lawyer, etc etc used faith to prove a concept or solve problems. We all know that fear of the unknown and indoctrination is what holds our evolution hostage. Half these morons don't even recognize the facts of evolution. One of the greatest moments in our history of our species (along with extra planetary intelligence, universal understanding, and travel) will be when we decide that we aren't afraid of the unknown, when we are comfortable saying "I don't know", and when we stop believing in mythical deities and start believing in something real like each other.
