There's a very important distinction between art and work. Art is done for fun, and if it can be sold for money, that's just a happy coincidence. Work is done for money, and if it's fun, that's just a happy coincidence. People are not flipping burgers for fun, they do it because someone else is willing to pay for the burger. Most of what humans do is work. It's not fun, it's just a thing we have to do to survive and support the lifestyle we desire. But if you do something for fun, you can keep doing it even if machines do it better. People still make things by hand, when factories can crank out better and cheaper products. People still play chess, even when a smartphone can beat the world champion 100 out of 100 times. So when people complain about automation replacing their art (including hand-made physical goods), what they really mean is losing their income source. It's of course fair to worry about that, but at least be honest about it. And this is not the first time it happens. The process begun with the industrial revolution, it just wasn't feared much by intellectuals, as they only benefited from it, and those who lost their livelihood didn't have a voice. What artists are experiencing now is the same that happened to factory workers when industrial robots took over, or small shop owners when Wall Mart showed up in their neighborhood. But on the other hand, in general most of us are all better off with automation. The average first world standard of living is far higher today than 100 years ago. AI and humanoid robots are just the next wave. Long term they will bring prosperity that's unimaginable today.
