One problem here is that you’re equating the value of something (a skill, an item you produced, etc.) with its profitability. Profitability isn’t a reliable indicator of the inherent worth of something. Frequently businesses or products are profitable despite being actively harmful and a net negative to the overall well-being of humanity and our environment (alcoholic beverages for example). Other things are unprofitable or even cost money despite being absolutely essential to the continuance of our species (parenthood for example). AI making something that other people would consider “good enough” that it would cause them to just generate that rather than buying something you made isn’t inherently a problem. It becomes a problem because it removes your ability to leverage your artistic skills to earn money, which you need in order to pay for stuff. Because everything you need costs money. If you were able to meet your needs without having to earn money and buy things, AI generated art is no longer a problem for you. AI doesn’t actually threaten art, it can’t stop anyone from making art. It threatens people’s ability to trade art for money in a system where survival requires money. The real problem isn’t AI; it’s the economic assumption that survival must be earned. That assumption will become more and more absurd as AI takes away more and more jobs.
