I liked this video, it was honest, interesting and touching. But I think it failed to answer to the idea that there can be AI art, and how it could be made. I have almost never seen an argument about what AI can offer that other mediums can. Almost everyone uses AI to imitate photography, painting or video, to as its own specific thing. If you want to make a painting, using a toolthat can only imitate it will result in uninteresting soulless works. But if we try yo use the specificities of the medium as a tool, it can become interesting. What are the specificities of the AI medium? From the top of my mind I'd say -an uncanny result that resembles reamity but always feels off -unpredictable variations -the capacity for unplanned incoherence There are probably a lot of other things. I believe we should focus on these ideas instead of simple imitation. I have seen some AI art that I found interesting, and most of it was really weird and incomfortable. For example there are artists generating human-animal hybrids videos. I've never seen something as realistic while spatially and anatically incoherent, as disturbing and funny-lookin as this. It has a very distinct look that would be insanely hard to recreate without AI (and why wpuld someone imitate an AI look with CGI?). I am very fond of body horror and have seen many disturbing things, CGI and practical effects are great tools that we should keep on using, but AI can make things weird and disgusting in a unique way, by not trying to be CGI and practical effects. Another example I have seen was an instagram reel depicting Mark Zuckerberg observing me wit excited eyes, hidden behind differents things on a train. I liked this video because it used both the Instagram reel form and AI as a medium in an interesting way. This video of Zuck spying on me appearing inmy reels creates a distanciation effect that reminds you of the economic and politucal structure of the cobtent you're watching, you are being watched for money when you use Instagram. And the use of AI reinforces this feeming by making this spying inhumane. It looks like Zuck but you know it's just a system, a machine, and it feels like this. If one tried to make this videowith the real guy it would be either cringe or funny, if it was drawn it could be funny or kinda scary, but never as uncanny. Another example would be my own attempts at AI art a few years ago. I used VQGAN around 2021/2022 to generate impossible things. I wanted the machine to fail at depicting real things. At that time AI generated images had no sens of perspective, physical and spatial coherence, there were recognizable shapes, but nothing that could be mistaken for a drawn or photographed image. I would create gore images that looked disturbing because of colours and textures but that would look like no existing organs. Once I just used the word "guts" and the result was a Guts (the character from Berserk) shaped pile of red, swelling organs. I had not thought of the polysemic aspect of the word but AI "hallucinated" or "dreamt"(I am aware of the inaccuracy of these terms, but it definitely can feel like this sometimes) a link between these and created something that I wouldn't have thought about, and that looked cool. I could find other examples, uses can be varied, but I think I made my point clear. I am not claiming AI art in general is interesting, or even that most of it is, but I think we are mistaken in the idea that this cannot make anything interesting and touching. We should't try to use AI to imitate other forms of art, the same way cinema should not be used to imitate theater ("filmed theater" is a pejorative description of movies that rely only on acting and dialogue without having any cinematographic aspect), but be it's own thing, using framing, time and editing as tools.
