About your point on us trying to beat China in AGI, I agree with your overall outlook, but the proponents for less regulation do have a point. You said it yourself: you can’t trust independent bodies to regulate themselves. China and the US are independent bodies. They have their own motives and interests, and they will put those above all else. Tools like AI have such potential that it is true that whoever controls them controls the world, and if that means that the most powerful AIs are controlled by intentionally malicious actors such as China, that has big implications on the rest of the world. By that logic, I could understand why American companies would want less regulation, bc if they’re continuing unregulated, why should we be at a disadvantage? Now I am not saying this to propose that lack of regulation is the right way to go. On the contrary, we do need regulation to ensure our survival. Rather, I am saying this to make the point that maybe we just weren’t ready for AI yet as a species. We rushed into it without a coordinated plan to contain it by all countries involved, and we are hoping that we can learn as we go, as we have done with all previous technologies. The only difference is that the implications of failure this time around are life and death for all humans
