As someone in the datacenter industry, this shows me how much misinformation is being put out about water usage in modern datacenters. Most datacenters in this country, utilize closed loop systems that are designed not to "consume" water in the traditional sense. They're consumption is typically the same as a typical office building, not the stated "millions" of gallons per day. We actually monitor, very closely, if our facility is "losing" water from our closed loop. The new design of upcoming AI supercomputer datacenters, are moving towards glycol cooled equipment and away from traditional water cooled systems. Even datacenters that use cooling towers for evaporative cooling, don't consume a massive amount of water. They'll have "make up" systems that introduce fresh water into the system to make up for losses due to evaporation, but we're talking thousands of gallons, not millions lol. I can absolutely guarantee you that Microsoft is, in fact, not "rapidly abandoning" datacenter projects lol. They pulled back on 2 gigawatts of specific "leased" sites for reasons that will be kept close to the chest, including that DeepSeek came along and drastically increased machine learning efficiency. Microsoft pivoted and instead of building new sites, they just invested in DeepSeek for a better ROI.
