Hi Sam! I'm not sure if you will ever see this post but I'm writing it anyway 🙂 First of all, happy new year ;-) (it's past christmas now) Second - I agree 100% with you in one aspect - those models created on your (or any others artist's) art SHOULD NOT BE USED commercially! You designed this style so you should be the only one to reap benefits from it. However! I do not agree with the rest of the arguments and I want to address them in some manner. But I'll start from another angle. You do great art, I really dig your illustrations. But I only know about you due to AI art and the controversy regarding it. I may have seen some random image of your art or Greg's on reddit but the association between those images and you as the creator never clicked for me. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of people like me. So, we can't deny that you're getting exposure (rightfully so, your art is great). But I do not agree with your opposition of the AI in the global sense. Why ban it for everyone? At this point you can't stop the bad actors from doing the bad things (since 1.4/1.5 models are out there, the dreambooths of your style are there) and the casual people who do stuff based on your style only give you exposure. They will generate something nice and will share the prompt, someone will ask what kind of model was used and it then leads back to you! IF anything you should advocate for the commercial usage to be illegal or at least made in a way so that you get some tantiems for the inspiration that you gave. But pushing to stop the AI art movement is BAD! I will point out two things, 1) When digital cameras emerged there were a lot of photographers who were against it, they said it would replace them. Same thing with Photoshop, a lot of artists were scared that it would put them out of the job. Yet we are here and all is fine, people adapt. AI is no different (you can google for opinions of artists that describe how the AI helps them with the workflows!) 2) The motivation to ban AI is wrong. It's the same motivation as with banning piracy (songs/movies). I'm not saying piracy is good (it isn't), but the reasoning for it was as follows: if we allow piracy to thrive then we lose a lot of money because people who pirate are not giving us money. Sure, that part is right. BUT if you ban piracy then you WILL NOT get more money, because those people would decide to SKIP on that content and move on. However if you go with the flow and embrace it, then you get nice results (an example is a niche movie, that is really great, called The Man From Earth). I was able to see it due to the magic of the internet. There were no cinema screenings of that movie in my country. That movie was not available on DVD from our country. But I've seen it and engaged in many discussions on the internet about it. The creator said that the piracy put that movie on the map, otherwise it would have been forgotten. What I'm saying is that it is a complex issue with many facets. Way more people know about you now, this could translate into more profit. If you start lobbying for the tantiems idea, perhaps something will be born out of that idea? But you could also be remembered as one of those who wanted to stop progress and CENSOR the freedom (which the use of AI is or at least it is considered that way). Sorry for my long post. Again, no hate - just constructive criticism 🙂 ps. the contest to make the best "samdoesart" model and sending it to you was clearly a DICK move, i have to admin that it was in bad taste.
