Theres a interesting field of statement analysis. Let's just say there's an awful lot to read between the lines that even adept listeners miss out on. Add to that nuances in tone, volume, cadence, rate of speech, fluidity, etc. And AI has the potential to out perform humans socially in call center settings.
The average person usually doesn't respect how important the above is, and since researchers are just average people, it may take a while to bring ai to that point.
