I live in Sweden. One of the countries with the least road accidents resulting in deaths of pedestrians. One can question why Sweden stands out in that statistics. The reason might well be that according to the law every time it's the drivers fault. You heard it. No matter if the place is awkward, no street lighting present, the pedestrian is not wearing reflective clothing. It is always driver's fault. And it works like a charm. Nobody speeds in areas with insufficient lighting or where pedestrian might be present. If you see a pedestrian close to the road you are expected by the law to slow down as you never know what that person might do. And that brings me to weakest point of autonomous driving. Dealing with uncertainty. AI seems not to be capable of dealing with complicated situations characterised by the high level of uncertainty such as pedestrians crossing the road in random places.
