Here's a take against the artists... Well, the ones I'd call "Elitist Artists": Do not act against people who use AI art for reference art when they are initiating a project in a medium that does not involve AI (such as painting a canvas, watercolors, ye olde pencil or pen art...).
AI art is flawed? Yes. But finding actual references can sometimes prove to be a real pain or impossible without forking out some three-digits figures at an actor, or without having to learn a whole different kind of art to produce something so you can produce something. And even Google-fu has been proving itself to be less efficient nowadays. And some people hate themselves too much to be their own actors.
Not only that, but some artists (like the one from a certain Mega Man X fangame), are such anti-AI assholes they would flat out say "then toss all your art gear away, you are not a real artist!" at someone who uses AI art merely for a reference for a SINGLE painting they are working on.
Of course there's also the matter of "this is stealing" or "AI is plagiarism" which... Not gonna lie, AI "Art" when used by self-proclaimed AI "Artists" are literally that, specially because there's no real effort in there. But it's wrong to lump every AI Art Generator user with those AI "Artists": Some people use them for fun, not for business, and some people, as I said, may use them to produce an image that closely reproduces what they had in mind so that they can have a better idea of how to pass what they have in their head to the paper or canvas. Specially in the case of people with attention issues, autism and whatanot, where the idea won't be stuck in the head the whole time, and from one day to another they can forget what they were doing (what actually happened to me once: I was producing something out of my head, but since I can only utilize the atelier once per week, the idea was gone by the next week, and I could never produce anything satisfying with what was the original idea, and that got me into a two weeks slump and a lot of frustration.
In short: Let people have fun with AI, only really chew on people who are AI "Artists", and remember that if your art got "stolen" to train AI it is all on you for not being cautious enough (I can count on my hands the number of artists I know who put watermark spam on ALL their art well before the AI boom, because they KNEW some other people would steal to trace or recolor).
A little late, but... AI is, in fact, getting inevitable, for better or worse. However not all hope is lost: Some AI "Artists" prices themselves as much as actual artists or higher, and that causes them to lose customers; meanwhile actual artists do get paid better for providing higher quality image.
