I disagree with Shad about Ghibli being "uninspired", but I agree with his perspective on AI as a great tool for artists and non-artists alike.
I think your video can be summarized into 2 points:
1. Unfair and unethical practice by AI companies.
It is fact that generative AI produces picture/artwork using the work of human artists (also journalists/photographers, calligraphers, and others) as reference. We can debate whether it is "stealing" or not (IMO analyzing and storing data of human artwork for future reference does not constitutes "stealing"), but it is certainly form of *plagiarism,* which is undeniably *unethical.*
However, IMO the blame should squarely fell on individuals/companies who are knowingly using AI to copy the art style of others to make a profit out of them.
AI companies simply develop/provide a tool that could be used in both ethical and also unethical ways, we should blame those who are using it in unethical ways.
IMO these use cases, among others, are ethical:
1.1. Using AI to create random image for inspiration,
1.2. Use it to help you improve productivity, for example by asking it to generate variations of your original artwork, like change the outfit of your character, or background, etc
---
2. Loss of opportunity for human artists.
This is unfortunate result of the advent of AI. However, the benefit is IMO far outweighs the negative.
Both the loss of traditional jobs (painter, artist, animator, etc), and the loss of opportunity for talented individuals to start learning art (since many can no longer make a living from doing art) will definitely hurt the art community (also various other occupations and communities), but IMO it will benefit the society as whole:
2.1. Improvement in productivity:
It is undeniable that AI improve productivity, from writing business emails, to making minor adjustments in artworks (and various other relatively simple, but extremely tedious tasks, from editing videos, fixing photos, analyzing documents, producing financial report for my employer, etc).
2.2. Better accessibility to previously inaccessible contents/materials:
I love history and geopolitics (aside from art). Thanks to AI, I can now watch and listen to various videos, podcasts, and speeches by famous world leaders from different countries/cultures (yes, including the speeches of evil dictators like Stalin, Mao, and Hitler), to know/understand their history and culture better. This is big plus for me personally.
I also like the work of various artists (and musicians) who either no longer around, or no longer produce new art, or those who are still producing art, but I can not afford them to make art for me. With AI I can enjoy more of them. I think it is fine as long as I don't profit from them. Ofc you may disagree, but honestly I don't care, and I'll still generate AI images for my own personal enjoyment.
I will still support them by buying their books or musics, but I feel no guilt of generating AI artworks and musics using the works of human artists and musicians as references.
