I had something similar happen (though well before AI art back in 2011 or so): I illustrated a children's book with a writer, she paid me for my art but it was back before I had contracts written out. I was very excited when she reached out to have me illustrator her next book but she got upset when I showed her that this time around I wanted a contract and have a tiny bit of royalties. She blew up and told me she wasn't going to pay me at all so I said ok and figured that was that. I found out later that she had *another* artist draw OVER my artwork and put that as her next book. It looks absolutely horrendous and she put my name on the book too. I emailed her about it obviously upset and she threatened to go to court over it and said she had a judge friend, etc etc. I was very devastated and, at the time, didn't know all my rights when it came to my art so I let it drop. Lesson learned though, I never do any work for anyone without a contract and payment half up front and royalties when necessary. AI or not, there are lots of nice people out there but even the "nice" ones will take advantage of you, it's best to make sure to protect yourself and your art. Your time and effort is worth money.
