For all the discussions on AI, one thing we sorely miss is the mundane-ness of it all. Like, ffs, matmuls predicting word ordering aren't sentient. Object detection models don't find one type of dog cuter than another. Traffic monitoring cameras doesn't silently judge you for your driving. ChatGPT doesn't love you, or hate you, or think about you at all. It is a word-prediction backbone with adapters for images and sounds. If a chatbot can tell you what a chemist could tell you, it isn't a weapon. We really shouldn't normalize gatekeeping knowledge.
