Mr. Hinton seems like a good man. And, yes, an absolute genius. However, there is one very simple, fundamental principle that he seems to be totally ignorant of... Something that likely comes from his formative years where Capitalism was able to look as if it was doing good things for people: There is lots and lots of "work" that needs to be done, but that never gets done because it is not profitable to some rich guy. Putting millions of people onto Universal Basic Income will not result in them "not having anything to do," or "not having a purpose." It will free them up to do all the things that have always needed to be done that rich people couldn't figure out a way to exploit to satisfy their greed. Things like take care of their sick neighbor. Things like educate their community. Things like create. Things like "figure out a way to make AI safe."
Yes, he is a genius. But he also doesn't realize that there are lots more geniuses out there who weren't lucky enough to be able to become an academic. There are lots of geniuses out here who are stuck working at McDonalds, because they were born in a small town, in the middle of nowhere, with a terrible education system, and no one to mentor them to be able to climb out of the ditch that Capitalism pushed them down into.
