Humans are also fancy autocomplete - there’s a whole body of psych research based on the N400 which we think is a marker of a violation of expectation. It shows up when people are reading a sentence and the next word isn’t what they expected. Like “the boy was talking with the bicycle”. I’m not sure that impacts how worried I am about AI, but I do think people write off LLMs too easily with a “they’re fancy autocomplete” because…yeah. But so are we, and we can get up to some pretty crazy stuff.
