If we step back objectively and regard humanity as a mechanical component (one of a lot, in a bunch of time) of the evolutive process in nature, our purpose just might be to create ai. Evolution is about matter organization. More complex patterns require more prerequisites.
Relatively, we can be thought of as a prerequisite for electronic life. It can not evolve, it must first be made by some idiot. For us it's instinctive, someone is doing it sooner or later, end of story.
