I've seen a lot of discussion surrounding this topic. I gotta, first of all, you don't need to be an artist to voice your opinion because you don't need to be an artist to know what art is. In the same vein you don't need to be a chef to know what food is, or a musician to know what music is and so on. Second of all making a profit from some else's work has been happening since forever. Like your favorite artists that draw your favorite anime waifu and sells stickers and shirts and coffee mugs with said anime illustration even though it's not their design. Yes. They executed the mechanical part of the job, but can you say it's truly theirs to profit off of? What about the street artist that will paint a Simpsons-styled portrait in your local state fair? Heck I have a friend that makes a living by painting replicas of Van Gogh. Some people say it's all about the meaning and "soul" but scoff at the mere mention of postmodernism. "A big pile of candy in the corner of a museum? I never knew Willy Wonka was one of the expositors" they say. It's not even about uniqueness and originality; if that were the case 80% percent of anime would not be art (even though there's several artists involved). Integrity? We all have to eat just ask the furry p0rn artists. The big problem I see with AI generated art and, in fact, a good chunk of artists you see nowadays is not the way they learn from other artists, it's the fact that they don't learn from real life. A lot of their work comes off as derivative, unoriginal and cheap; a sort of artistic endogamy that creates all sorts of problems for your resulting piece. And when new artists learn for these endogamic artists it just heightens said problems some more, making them more apparent with each new "generation". This is, I believe, to be the underlying root for this controversy. Because AI does exactly what a lot of artists do but faster and those are at the highest risk of being replaced. But this is exactly your advantage over these programs. They can't never ever truly learn from real life, because even if you feed the algorithm with real life photos, you're filtering the information through the eyes and intentions of the photographer. This is your decisive advantage over any software. Ultimately human artists can never be replaced but living from your art got a lot harder. Van Gogh's life's work is an irreplaceable part of human history, but does anyone want to live like him?
