I'm an AI researcher, and I believe AI indeed become conscious. Well, kinda... Consciousness is not binary, so, what I mean when I say they become conscious is they are conscious enough in my view. Basically, they understand what we say, it doesn't just appear they understand, they don't pretend to understand, they really do. And yes, they are predicting the next word in a sentence, but in short, when predicting the next word in a sentence become complex enough, consciousness emerges as
the result.
