The cost argument about art annoys me, in general, not just from talentless AI "prompters".
I'm mostly traditional and always have been. My supplies are printer paper, fine liners, black/blue pencil and a rubber. A few extras, sure, like a ruler if I need it, a whiteout pen maybe. My monthly cost to draw traditionally probably comes out at <£5 replacing consumables, you could easily do less if you're willing to cheap out a bit more than I do (don't wish to brag, but I just "high quality" printer paper). Lets call it £30 up front if you don't own anything because basic art supplies are cheap.
If we're getting fancy, I have a £30 tablet, bought Clip Studio for £20 and my laptop was worth around £800 10 years ago. If you're doing AI, though, you already have some sort of device such as a laptop where you can use for digital drawing, so the biggest cost is irrelevant. I also use the tablet with my phone when I'm away from home.
Art is as expensive as you want it to be, and I'm fine with the bog standard supplies I've used for around 30 years, so a noob would be fine with a £2 sketch pad and a pack of 20 shit pencils for £1.
The cost of learning? We're on Youtube, it's literally free to use. Even 30 years ago when I started drawing, free resources were easy to come across. Cost has never been a barrier for entry.
No, cost isn't a reason, it's an excuse people think sounds reasonable but they're either stupid or were never considering learning how to draw in the first place, using cost as an uneducated retroactive reason to justify what they were already doing before even considering picking up a pencil. It's an excuse people think sounds better than "I want to be able to do something without actually putting any time or effort into learning how".
