I change my opinion - between A-bombs, corporate and political psychopathy, capitalist greed and its subsequent disregard for global warming/resource depletion we are already screwed. And AI could be our last hope. We are already on a trajectory for extinction and have been since the industrial revolutions reliance on fossil fuels AND Oppenheimer. We cant even seem hold our "democracies" to account any more with collective people power because of the world ending capabilities that they wield. even if people got sick of how things are done and demanded change, who would seize control of these dangerous ICBM facilities? No one sane enough to be held to account for management of them alone. at least from my perspective. Anything short of a solar flare and subsequent electro-magnetic field strong enough to destroy all of the technology that makes us capable of worldwide catastrophe may allow us to rebuild governments with people in charge who DO NOT allow planned obsolescence, a throwaway economy,premature and reckless resource depletion as well as environmental destruction. What is going to deliver us from almost inevitable extinction instead if not AI? not to mention that the same personality archetype/control freaks that are likely going to be the first on any legacy ship to evacuate Earth are also The same control nuts who created this ridiculous scenario in the first place and would likely do it again. If there is somehow an alternate solution to a galactic event that destroys nearly ALL tech we have avaliable rn - then AI could be ONLY other way. It could be our ONLY hope of finding a new solution to all of these interlaced/interlinking problems driving our trajectory towards extinction.
