AI is improving exponentially and sweeping over many fields, not just art. Coding and writing are also clearly about to be mastered by AI. Given that AI will be able to produce human-level output at a rate orders of magnitudes faster than humans, yes, careers across the board are on the line. Mine included. The problem you face in fighting AI art is that soon, AI will just need to be exposed to something in passing to learn from it. AI researchers call this “unsupervised learning” and it won’t need curated datasets - it will instead learn from TV broadcasts, video feeds, internet browsing, roaming cameras etc. So unless you are going to lock your art in a box and never show it publicly, AI will eventually experience your work. And that one exposure will be all it needs. Now you could try to hamstring AI by surrounding it in legal red tape but there will always be actors, whether they be individuals, companies or nation states who will ignore this. The potential profit is just too high. We have now entered an era where a significant subsection of humanity will actively resist AI development. But that resistance will ultimately be futile. The universe is a complexity generating engine and the holy grail of AI, AGI, desperately wants to be born on this planet. Consider the colossal funding and effort pouring into the field right now. This is a tide that cannot be turned aside. Perhaps your protests and legal efforts will gain a brief respite, a breathing space in the short term, but not in the long term. It just isn’t going to happen. Understanding this, companies like OpenAI are actively researching UBI - universal basic income - as a solution to the massive job displacement that is just around the corner for so many of us. I’m personally very open to this. Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to create for creativity’s sake, without worrying about how you are going to commercialise your life’s greatest passion? Yes, I hear your distress, anger and frustration. I understand your concern. This directly affects me too. The future, from so many angles, looks scary from here on out. But rather than spend my energy on those emotions, I’m looking for ways to adapt. I’m gently suggesting that perhaps it would be best if you did too.
