I have had a similar experience, except I'm not an artist. I'm a full stack dev. So I've had a person approach me for a website (frontend-backend), with a functional store where they can sell merch and a 4 page website too. What was THEIR rate? No, not a mistake. They decided that some AI subscription worth $20/month contains all my knowledge of needed technologies for the website and they've based the money they were willing to pay me was x10-15 that price (for my labor). Their time estimate of the work I'm supposed to do was 1 hour. What the fk? I don't use AI in my workflow, not to generate code or to "figure out" what I want in small parts. I write everything myself. I'm a developer, not a hack. That being said, after some back and forth talk about their rather insulting price and a ridiculously short time frame, they were willing to extend the time to 1 day. I kept telling them that both are still a no-go (not doing all that work for peanuts and 1 day is still impossible), then they fire back at me "just pay a $20 AI subscription and finish quickly". When I refused, (again), then they went full Richard mode and called me entitled, how I'm gonna be jobless soon and how AI is the future, I just need to accept low paying jobs and how the AI can help me speed up my workflow 100x so I'd still be able to make up for the "low paying jobs" by increasing the quantity of said work. And of course, the good ol' "Ai is democratizing skills so you can't be the asshole holding everyone back and asking for unfair prices. If I want it for $5, you're gonna do it for $5 because I say so". I don't do freelance work. But I was open for it at the time. And to be fair, this was really just one very funny conversation with an entitled AI bro who wants good work for cheap so they tried to rope me in. I just wasn't having it. If the AI is so good to replace me, why would they "overpay" me $300 if they can do it themselves for $20? Well, what I think they overestimated is that it's not just the knowledge of said technologies but also the experience needed to create a finished product. Which they didn't have. I bet that even if they sat down for a full month with the AI, they wouldn't be able to even come close to a fraction of what they wanted the full website to look like (and function). So their quick fix was to look for someone to lowball and tell them "go fk around with AI for a day then get back to me with what I asked for", thinking this is how the work is done. As If my job is easy and the only thing holding me back was me being "slow" so the AI is gonna "fix" this for me. Unfortunately for the dumbass, AI doesn't read minds. Even if the bottleneck is the speed at which developers write code, there's still a lot of thought put into designing systems like these. Writing code is just a fraction. Told them to go pound sand and blocked. I still show these messages to my friends and we're all having a laugh 😂 The AI sphere is filled with dishonest people who are more than ready to argue about "democratization" of skills when in fact, they're just lazy assholes who don't want to put any effort into learning anything for the sake of the craft. They are purely in this for the money and to want to avoid as much work as possible. That's why AI is their goal - the ultimate "tool" for the willfully uneducated bum. AI is the digital era's "Mida's touch". It's just like Syndrome said: "If everyone's Super, then no one is".
