The real elephant in the room is information security. There is no invulnerable software on a network. Unless the autonomous system is self contained it will eventually be breached.
The other problem with autonomous vehicles is the loss of a skill set. How many people can drive a manual transmission? Imagine 50 years from now when nobody can drive and information system fails.
