I've been on pixiv and they have tags to indicate AI generated art, specifically Stable Diffusion. I mostly see these when people try to recreate characters from a video game or TV show and whenever I see them it's always fairly easy to pick out the ones that are AI generated. They always have a certain ... 'generic-ness' to them that's really hard to describe. They tend to have very similar poses (all front facing) and are often lacking in certain details; for example stylized animal ears on a character are usually replaced with fairly generic ones and hair tips that would be colored aren't. Granted I don't think these issues will stay around in my lifetime but I think it highlights an issue with current AI art: it's trained on _too many_ images. It doesn't take into account the little details human artists give to their characters and oftentimes erases them because they don't fit in with what the many, many images in its data set say the image ought to look like. This could be solved by making character specific AI art generators but some characters are just so obscure that I think current AI won't have enough images to properly recreate said character.
I also don't think AI means the end of real artists, rather just a change in how real artists make art. I can forsee a couple of things happening in the next decade or two. One, humans self regulating (if the law does nothing) art by creating tools to detect AI art and screen them out. Two, artists developing anti-AI techniques that intentionally screw with how the AI makes art if those works are used. Best analogy I can think of for this is chess; when AI came and threatened to be better than any chess player out there, the entire chess community didn't roll over and admit defeat. They developed techniques that were made specifically to thwart AI strategies. People remember that Deep Blue beat one of the best chess players of the time but no one remembers that the games were actually really damn close.
Anyways tl;dr AI isn't the end, just a new thing we all got to adapt to. Humans are lagging behind but once we figure it out AI art won't seem as threatening.
imo it needs to be regulated by law though, just to prevent copyright issues.
