We'll know when AI is conscious if/when we develop AI tools to do independent scientific research, perhaps trained on physics where the questions and answers are close to pure math. A machine that can generate hypotheses and test them at the rate of thousands of iterations per minute could advance human understanding on a logarithmic scale.
