The _only_ reason we even accept that other _people_ are conscious is because we're built from the same stuff. So, even if we create an AI that jumps up and down screaming it's conscious, we'd find no reason to believe it. We just wouldn't, unless we found a way to quantify consciousness in people first -- some kind of definitive test, which would necessitate identifying at least one human who was _not_ conscious even though they appear to be. What's interesting is the possibility that maybe we find more than one. What if (like psychopathy) consciousness is on a sliding scale, and 1% of humans are walking around doing human stuff (at least when anyone's looking) without any consciousness whatsoever while majority of us (let's say 85%) have full consciousness? What would it mean to be someone in that 14% who are deemed consciousness-impaired? Scary stuff, but at least I know _I_ am 100% conscious, so F*** 'em all I guess.
