I find it a bit interesting how dismissive many are about his claim... First....I don't believe him. Nor am I convinced he's wrong. Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if he's right on some level. But the experts who dismiss this claim always use the same argument: That these hyper intelligent NLP AIs are "merely" using their vast knowledge and wealth of experience and situational cues and learned behavior to "mimic" a conscious being. Ok... but that's basically precisely how humans experience their own conscious awareness and behavior. I am merely this empty awareness that somehow "beholds" thoughts and words and actions that my brain generates as a result of learning best-case scenarios over millions of various experiments and learning over my life. The point is....consciousness is not necessary whatsoever to the functioning of my brain. It seems, imo, to be an emergent phenomenon....one that I think will necessarily emerge in AI as well. Dimly at first....and then so obviously that we'll just assume AI are conscious even though we'll never ever know for certain. But we also cannot prove anyone other than ourselves is conscious. Solipsism is a paradox that cannot be solved. Over time we are simply going to assume AI are conscious for precisely the same reason we assume other humans are conscious.
