I have a better idea... For all self driving car manufacturers, pay attention..
You could instead use a combined system of magnetometers, static electricity detectors & further down the line, gravitational wave detectors.
Using those combined systems you can basically "see" everything, from poles and people to walls and cars and changes in topography on the road.
Obviously you still have cameras in the mix, but with these other sensors you get a more accurate detection system that won't be as easily screwed up by darkness or rain.
