Northrop Frye
"I suppose computers are the physical realization of magic, just as the television screen is the the physical realization of ghosts"
Entry, Notebook 44 (1986-91) 262 Northrop Frye's Late Notebooks, 1982-1990: Architecture of the Spiritual World (2000) CW.5
Marshall McLuhan
McLuhan asserted that media and technologies in general were used by humans to extend their bodily capabilities into the environment, with different technologies augmenting the capacities of different sensory organs and muscles.
Thus AI is an extension of the user's psyche, not in and of itself an independent being. It is a Rorschach-like interactive system wherein the human actor builds a re-entrant communication loop in his/her cortical region, a process which operates continuously and is beyond a person's control - this creates typical human referenced illusions. The human observer is the only intelligence in play.
Turing test
Turing did not intend for his idea to be used to test the intelligence of programs — he wanted to provide a clear and understandable example to aid in the discussion of the philosophy of artificial intelligence.[77] John McCarthy argues that we should not be surprised that a philosophical idea turns out to be useless for practical applications. He observes that the philosophy of AI is "unlikely to have any more effect on the practice of AI research than philosophy of science generally has on the practice of science."[78]
