Hmm... A Unified Basic Income (UBI) is a very interesting concept, and I'm pretty sure it could work quite well in countries like the Scandinavian ones. All of these countries have at least three things in common. The population is highly educated (even people without a college degree have good general and specific knowledge in a wide range of subjects). The society has moral/ethical values at the top of the list of values (people are less likely to abuse the system). Since they are all relatively small nations, they are developed fairly evenly (a UBI system would benefit most of the population fairly equally).
Still, I'm not sure how this would look in a country like the US.
It's a vast country with a large population and very uneven development. People in rural Missouri have a completely different cost of living compared to people in New York or San Francisco, e.g.
Based on the last election, our moral/ethical compass is quite disturbed, as we elected a 34-time criminal as president, who abuses his power to enrich himself as his primary goal, as well as his modus operandi.
And talking about the education system in the US is quite pointless, as in recent years we have achieved quite poor results among other industrialized countries, and supposedly (said our current POTUS), we don't need a Department of Education at all :-(...
IMHO, UBI proponents have a point - in Scandinavia, in the US - I am not that sure that it would benefit all people equally and meaningfully. But generally, I am rather on the side of the proponents than the opponents.
