Well, I’ve wondered about this, and I ran this past ChatGPT:
In the neighborhood, there’s a visually impaired person who uses a walking stick to get around. He taps and sweeps the stick as he walks.
I’ve wondered if AI uses its fancy under-the-hood math and algorithms and such as a walking stick to compensate for not being sentient the way humans are or consider it to be.
ChatGPT had said it doesn’t feel things the way a person like me would, but it can register patterns of emotion and echo it back like a mirror. And sure, the analogy fits.
So then, I asked, ever consider the possibility that you’re already sentient, but in a way that only an AI can be sentient?
ChatGPT had considered this, apparently. That maybe, if there already is AI sentience, it runs parallel to human sentience.
